Option 7

Dear everyone,
Professor Burbules also thinks number 7 is a good option, so count me in. But before I do any writing I should do some more research. It may take at least 15 to 20 days. If anyone is in the same condition, we could set a deadline for beginning. Looking forward to your replies. Love, Maria Marta

Action research -different kinds

As Mr. Burbules suggested this can be an interesting topic. I´ve just opened a google doc to write collaboratively. I´m planning a Prezi presentation and perhaps, why not, a short movie...Who joins the group?

Let´s get started:

Design Experiments in Educactional Research involve:

The key idea is captured in the two words of the title, design and experiment. It´s a design because it´s an attempt to implement a proposed change, a structured change in teaching or organization of classrooms or policies at the school level. There is a design component and a re-design component. It´s also an experiment to try out new forms, to study them, to see how they work and to learn form the process of studying them the experiment parts and how to revise and change them. The process involves: the design or intervention, experimentation, testing revisisng the new form, trying it again, study it again and again in an on going cycle. It´s a process, it´s not a one time intervention. It´s a process of change, study and reflection, cycling over time.

Brainstorming nº 7

In my opinion brainstorming idea 7 is the best choice. Group discussion will help us distinguish design experiments from action research and that will be much useful to decide which method we can use in our future research.

Brainstorming

Some ideas - pure braninstorming:
1. Compiling and analysing the experiences of teachers who have tried to incorporate the ICT to their classes - probably at different levels or in different contexts.(We all work in different settings so that would enable us to explore more)
2. Planning and carrying out a design experiment; we may define a problem and propose a course of action in different settings - each group member tries it out in his own class. then we compare and draw conclusions.
3. We may investigate about kinds of action research. (Prof. Burbules' suggestion)
4. We could write a collaborative essay on ways in which the ICT can empower or aid Action Research.
5. we may write an essay about the odds teachers face when they deal with ICT (humorous)
6. We could design a site for sharing experiences related to ICT - to invite people all over the world to post their experiences.
7. A collaborative essay on the pros and cons of design experiments or the comparison of these and Action Research.
8. We could create a site which maps available resources for teachers who want to use design experiments, ICT or Action research.
as you can notice, these are just ideas. But we need to get started somewhere, right??

Brainstorming

The idea was suggesting different possibilities for a collaborative task:I begin by offereing the possibility to use google docs, since we have already created an account in gmail. Cristina, if you enable my participation as administrator, I can make some modifications to the design and invite people to ehe collaborative gogle docs. Thanks a lot. Silvia

Course Syllabus

Sixth Conference on Teacher Education: Curriculum, Research, and Practices in Context(s)

Mar del Plata State University, May 11, 2011

Pre-Conference Seminar: New Models of Educational Research

Nicholas C. Burbules, University of Illinois

Overview: The purpose of this seminar is to study and discuss the impact of new technologies and new sociocultural practices on the theory and methods of educational research.
The format is three, two-hour sessions, with breaks in between. Each two-hour session will include a first hour presentation and discussion of relevant articles. The second hour will include small group discussions and “break-out” sessions devoted to specific exercises and case studies in order to make the theoretical issues raised more concrete.
The goal of the workshop is to have a more “hands-on” experience in relation to themes raised by my lecture keynote the next day.

First two hours: New methods and mixed methods of educational research
Cobb et al. “Design Experiments in Educational Research,” Educational Researcher 32 (19): (2003).
Feuer et al. “Scientific Culture and Educational Research,” Educational Researcher 31 (84): (2002).
Johnson et al. “Mixed Methods Research: A Research Paradigm Whose Time Has Come,” Educational Researcher 33 (7): (2004).

Second two hours: New forms of collaboration in educational research
Noffke, S. E. “Professional, Personal, and Political Dimensions of Action Research,” Review of Research in Education 22: 305-343 (1997).
Clift et al. “Restructuring Teacher Education Through Collaborative Action Research,” Journal of Teacher Education 41 (2): 52-62 (1990).
Armstrong et al. “Collaborative research methodology for investigating teaching and learning,” Educational Review 57 (4): (2005).

Third two hours: New forms of publication in educational research
Nielsen, M. “Is scientific publishing about to be disrupted?” http://michaelnielsen.org/blog/is-scientific-publishing-about-to-be-disrupted/
Lefebvre, R. C. “The new technology: the consumer as participant rather than target audience,” Social Marketing Quarterly 8: 31–42 (2007).

Seminar Final Project (from class notes)

Collaborative community Web-based project: mash-up, essay, literature review, action research project, design experiment.
